TROCHANTERIC BURSITIS

 

What is Trochanteric Bursitis

 

Inflammation of the small jelly-like fluid filled sac called bursa on the side of the bony prominence (greater trochanter) of the hip Symptoms: Sharp or achy pain in the outer portion of the hip, especially when lying on the affected side, getting up from extending sitting, or prolonged walking, stair climbing, or sitting.

 

What causes Trochanteric Bursitis

 

Irritation of the bursa due to:

  • Repetitive stress or overuse injury - running, stair climbing, bicycling, or standing
  • njury to the side of the hip from fall, bump, or extended sidelying
  • Leg length discrepancy (one leg is shorter than the other)
  • Bone spurs
  • Hip surgery

 

What to do?

  • Rest and/or avoid prolonged aggravating activities 
  • Avoid sleeping on affected hip
  • Stretch tight hip muscles and strengthen weak hip muscles
  • Wear heel lift in shoe of shorter leg, if this is discovered
  • Physical therapy as prescribed
